I really hate that.. Samsung is becoming too much like Apple.. the thing I liked about Samsung was that they didn't try to force you into buying their newest product by making your device obsolete. but that is now quickly changing. the new Samsung devices dint have memory slots and no battery exchange. now their software is forcing you into newer devices? shame on Samsung.. I'm gonna start to hate Samsung too.. good thing android is an open market. I'll go to other devices. Samsung is getting too cocky..

Samsung pay uses MST along with NFC. the MST is what allows it to work on almost any credit card reader; even the old ones that do not have NFC built in. it emulates the magnetic field of a credit card strip. to do this requires an actual piece of technology inside the phone. this is the reason why it's only supported by their latest phones. they acquired a company called loop pay last year which held the patents to MST I believe.

I upgraded to the Note 5 and ended up returning it and going back to my Note 3. The note 4 was really the last good Note they made. I felt like they got rid of more things with the note 5 than they added. Very disappointed in Samsung.
