Springtime is an exciting time of the year for many people. Those who love gardening or just being outside welcome the return of warmer weather after a long winter. But for those who love golf, spring means everything. It’s The Masters on TV and a return to the fairways (and the rough and sand traps and water hazards … you get the idea). If you’re ready to start playing golf again, consider our list of the best golf gear for under $50! And maybe some of these products will help you stay in the fairway more often.

Golf Balls

We understand. The choice of golf ball brands is a very personal one. Every golfer has his or her favorite. But if you’re not a Callaway user currently, and you want to give this brand a try, now is the time. After all, the early part of the golfing season is the perfect time to try new gear.

The new Chrome Soft X golf balls from Callaway aren’t cheap, running a few dollars per ball, so they probably won’t be worth it for inexperienced golfers. But for intermediate to advanced players, the Soft X’s design is aimed at giving you more spin control while approaching the green, improving on last year’s popular Callaway Soft golf balls.

Women’s Cool Weather Gear

We’d all like it to be 75 degrees and calm winds in the early springtime for the first round of golf of the year. But if there’s one way to consistently describe spring weather, inconsistency would be the word. So before you break out the shorts and polo shirts, you’ll want to make sure you have some cool weather gear available too.

The ColdGear Under Armour long-sleeved mock for women is a really nice option. It’s designed to keep you dry with a breathable fabric, and the stretch fabric won’t inhibit your golf swing. It’s available in multiple sizes and five different colors.

For men, Under Armour offers the Storm SweaterFleece 1/4 Zip long-sleeved shirt for cool weather golfing. It’s water repellent, while remaining breathable and lightweight. And it comes in 19 different colors (which might make your spouse jealous).

Putter

You can purchase putters that cost a few hundred dollars and that have all kinds of crazy designs. And as long as the putter works, who cares how stupid it looks … or how much your buddies laugh at you.

But if you come from the golfing school of thought that says putting is 99% mental — meaning the equipment doesn’t really matter, as long as you trust it — perhaps it’s time to consider a putter that doesn’t cost all that much. Our favorite under $50 putter is the PGX from Pinemeadow. It has a large putting head with a well-contrasted target symbol, which can help inexperienced golfers visualize the straight stroke and follow through that is key to putting well.

Both men’s and women’s versions of this putter are available, as well as both left- and right-handed versions.

Putting Green

Although a putting green may seem more like a golf product you’d want to buy for practicing in the winter, you may be looking for one after three-putting half a dozen times in your opening round this spring.

We really like the Putt-A-Bout Grassroots putting green. It has a reasonable size at 9-by-3 feet, so you won’t have to build a second garage to house it. It only weighs 3.5 pounds, so it’s easy to move around. The kidney shape means you can try a lot of different angles to the three holes at the far end. And there are gutters beyond the holes to catch those errant putts … not that you’ll have any after using this tool for a few days. (If only the greens at your favorite course had gutters to catch those tricky downhill putts.)

Chipping Target Net

If your short game was as bad as your putting in your first round of the spring, you may want to double up and add a chipping target net to your putting green purchase. (This is not a net designed to catch drives or full swings when practicing, only chip shots.)

The Rukket Pop-Up SKEE-GOLF chipping net is one we really like. It has three target areas in the middle of the net, which is great for working on high-, mid-, and low-arc chip shots. Its measurement is similar to a 2-foot cube, which means it’s small enough to be usable in numerous locations. And the net folds down for easy storage, which is another really nice feature. The netting is nylon with a steel frame for enhanced durability.
