Shut Up and Take My Money (Literally): Plastc Programmable Credit Card

By on October 8, 2014

shut_up_and_take_my_moneyIdeal for anyone that dislikes carrying around tons of credit, rewards and gift cards, the Plastc card is a programmable card that allows users to select between all of their stored cards (up to 20) via a touchscreen e-ink interface.

The Plastc card includes a rewrite-able magnetic strip that allows users to swipe the card when in a store. There’s also NFC and RFID technology included in order to simply pass the card near a payment device (at a participating retailer) to complete a purchase.

Regarding security, a Plastc user has to enter a PIN code each time they want to activate the card. Otherwise, the magnetic stripe and NFC chip stay completely disabled. If a Plastc card is left accidentally at a store, the device triggers a notification that appears on the owner’s smartphone. At this point, the user can remotely wipe all payment information from the card and trigger a “This card is lost” screen to encourage people to return the device.

After a lost Plastc card is recovered, all the owner has to do is re-sync the card in order to regain all the payment information. The card also needs to be charged occasionally via the wireless charging station. While the company hasn’t indicated how long the battery in the card will last per charge, the e-ink screen on the card will show an icon indicating the battery is low. The Plastc app will also trigger a notification on the owner’s smartphone.

Of course, all this cool technology comes at a price. At the moment, the card can be preordered for a price of $155. In addition, this shipping date for the card is at least 8 months away with an estimated delivery window of Summer 2015. If you are interested in Plastc, Be aware that these type of crowd-funded projects often miss shipping deadlines due to manufacturing issues and delays in product development.

Just ordered my plastc card. To be honest, aside from all the really amazing security features, I can’t wait to pull this card out on a date. Automatic panty drop. G-Level Snoop Dogg (Before his transformation into cool grandma).
