Eight Fantastic Character Sketches Using LEGOs, Markers

By on August 3, 2013

The Force is strong in this young LEGO master. Developed by illustrator and photographer Chris McVeigh, this collection of art combines famous pop culture characters with LEGOs. Using LEGO Digital Designer, McVeigh creates a LEGO brick canvas of 12 x 16 inches and uses markers to color in portions of the canvas.

Describing the process in an interview with Mashable, McVeigh said “Creating artwork with LEGOs is much more restrictive than with markers, and it’s always a challenge to find just the right combination of plates to represent a specific character. Adding to the complexity is that not all parts are available in all colors, and worse yet, I may not have all the parts on hand.”

Characters depicted within his series so far include the Dark Knight, Bender from Futurama, a Stormstrooper, Boba Fett, R2-D2, Jake from Adventure Time, Optimus Prime and a Jaeger from Pacific Rim. In addition to coloring in the characters with markers, McVeigh also adds additional LEGO pieces for accessories to complete the portrait.

You will be able to find future additions to the collection on his Flickr account here. But first, be sure to check out his first eight LEGO creations below:
