I grabbed one of these about a month ago and thought I would give my thoughts in case someone is thinking about doing the same.

The phone I got looked all right, but the USB port has issues and I can only charge it with one cable out of the 6 I have tried. The screen had burn-in and when I call someone they complain that they can't hear me well. It came with an OLD version of the operating system but I was able to easily upgrade it to Nougat 7.1 or some such version so that wasn't too bad.

The first month, they give you premium services in the hope that you won't cancel them. One of those services allow you to use actual cell service to make phone calls. Without that premium service, all your calls are VOIP (voice over IP), not true cell voice service. What the heck, right, its free! It works all right, especially if you are on wifi, but I don't think I would want to rely on it as my only source for voice calls.

I had some trouble cancelling the premium services to get down to the free service but figured out I was able to easily do it by going to the my.freedompop.com site rather than their normal site.

For $50, if I got a better phone I'd be happier than I am. It was an experiment with the service and how well it worked in my area but I think I will be staying with my normal Verizon service through Page Plus on my iPhone. I installed the FreedomPop app on my iPad and using it with my FreedomPop phone number actually works well and sounds fine. I'm now just on the free service so it won't cost me anything to keep it, but I doubt I will use it much.

So, I would give a mixed review. The company itself seems a bit shady especially with the way they want you to refer friends and do special offers to earn data.
