Shingled magnetic recording based drive. New technology that squeezes data overlapping. Prone to write slow downs as it needs to rewrite certain areas to fill them again. Seems sketchy and unproven so far. Most recommend for archive purposes but this technology needs more refreshing to prevent data corruption. Contradicting tech ideas. Contains possibly ST8000DM004 internally. I rather stick to non SMR drives. Sadly this SMR was created for higher capacities than 4gb but is now being used on less than 4gb obviously to save platter cost. So now thanks to high capacity drives we have lower capacity ones that are more prone to failure and writing issues.
The WDBCKA0080HBK-NESN at Best Buy for $160 this week is worth the extra $10 compared to this Seagate. Many in the Reddit community have already confirmed that inside those external drives are WD Red NAS based drives with either 128MB (model LGBJRCK ) or 256MB (model MGBJRCK ) cache.
