You can get 2 x AA to 1 x D cell adapters on for a couple bucks. They make 3 x AA to D adapters too but it depends on the device battery bay if they'll fit.
I have eneloop D cell adapters but I haven't tested how long this actually lasts on those. Rayovac also makes a AA sized lantern. If you're going to be using AA's, it's much smaller and lighter but not quite as bright.
The price is all over the place on this. I actually just ordered it for $2.56 as an add-on item. Worth putting in your cart to watch the price.
