Yeah it looks like the purchase will go through on their site but then it checks your email address against their list of recipients.

I already had a groupon account and noticed no increase in spam to the email address I supplied to create it. In other words you either already had a groupon account and are not exposing yourself any more than you already had - which I contend is minimal, or if you didn't already have an account there is no way your new email address would be on their list of those already emailed this offer for it to be valid.
