It's amazing how bad the theatrical version actually is compared to the extended edition. You're watching it and it's like WTF it's missing so much the story almost doesn't make sense. But since you didn't see the extended edition until much later the theatrical was good enough at the time.

I'm hoping the same is true of the Hobbit movies as well.
