I might harbor a deep-seated hope that somehow the extended editions of these movies will be better, but the series suffered badly from being stretched to three movies - like butter spread over too much bread.
Anyway, there's a "Tolkein Edit" out there which shortens the 3 movies into one and makes it all a lot more coherent, and honestly, a lot better. I'll leave it to y'all to locate it if you are so inclined, since such unauthorized edits are not strictly legal and we don't want Ben's to get in trouble.
