^ Allow you to graph stuff while using your phone for something else. Then again you could carry around your 2nd/old smartphone without a service plan for certain things.
It does bring up the question of how long TI expects to keep charging so much for mere calculators.

Ha! How true. My kids' (both in HS) math teachers, both passed out such a list at the beginning of Freshman year, indicating that each student should possess a TI-83. My son managed to lose his over the course of the year, so this may be a worthy replacement. Not cheap though, I agree.
