I don't really want a hunk of junk hanging off my house in 3-4 years when batteries stop holding charge. Why aren't they making more of these hardwired?

He probably meant, wire this up yourself and use the solar panel elsewhere. I'm sure a simple DC transformer would work (of sufficient amperes for full brightness)
