i guess you pay a price for getting less material, or more material. You have to buy what they want you to buy at $28. why discriminate....size matters.
I have the Saucony progrid. The shoe is very, very light; you wouldn't believe how light it is. And it's light because the walls on the front part of the shoe are a very thin meshlike stitching whereas the back part is a solid plastic but is somewhat thinner than the plastic you find on a Nike shoe. So the shell is somewhat thinner all around than a normal sneaker.
They're good for running and walking about. I've had them for 3 months and so far they show no signs of falling apart.
