Just buy 2 and "gang" 'em up. One set is less than worthless. A good set will be much more money. Or, buy or salvage welding cable and good clamps and make your own.

Usually all you have to do is wait half a minute after hooking it up so some charge got into the dead battery. Yes lower gauge/thicker cables are better, but in the longer term you're better off fixing whatever the problem is rather than having to keep jumping the vehicle.
