Free is more than it is worth. I had an air conditioning guy come over for $50, he was so incompetent his *** stunk, a local guy put in freon instead of changing $100 capacitors and it worked.
Would be fine to use as a resource if they'd give it free without a credit card. As soon as you said you wanted my credit card for a free basic membership I left.
I always use a prepaid card with $1 left so if I forget to cancel I don't have to worry. Works on linkedin premium membership when they give a free month. They always due a temp $1 hold to make sure to valid.
The idea behind Angie's list isn't that you're magically going to get better contractors that other normal people don't have access to. Contractors are going to advertise in as many places as they possible can... phone book, angie's list, home advisor, their own website, knocking door-to-door, etc. The reason Angie's list adds value is that the contractors should (in theory) recognize that these customers are PAYING MONEY to be matched with the best and will very quickly give bad reviews that are seen by all other users and actually mean something. Anyone can sign into Google+ and give a bad review, but someone that has paid for a list of contractors *should* be a more reliable piece of insight for other potential customers. The contractors are not magically better, but they should be trying harder so that their reputation isn't tarnished. When I did contracting work, we found that Angie's list prospects were WAY more likely to buy than say, for instance, someone that met a pushy salesperson at their door. We would then treat those leads better - FAR BETTER. That is what you're paying for here: ACCOUNTABILITY.

A few years back my father's A/C went out and the bill to come out and swap a motor start/run capacitor was over $200. You got off cheap.
Unfortunately that > $200 capacitor was the cheapest capacitor make/model on the market which failed about 2 years later. I was in town at the time, went to the local HVAC supply house and got a replacement for ~ $13.

True, but with each passing year there are more and more people looking to game the system, especially when a site membership like Angie's list costs less, even for multiple accounts to post fake reviews, than other forms of advertising.
Angie's list has let many of my neighbors down. They keep coming to me and asking if I know a "guy" due to poor results from there Angie's list lamos they send recommend. Allstate the "good hands people" gave me THE FINGER when I got a quote from them. Two businesses that the want to take money out of your pocket.

Agreed, the site wants valid credit card for auto renewal.
But you can cancel any time before then.
You hit that one out of park! I'm sure the list provide decent guidance but wow! Smoking gun.
