Saffiano means they took blemished top, or bottom grain, pressed it, then machined in a hatch pattern before binding it down with wax or similar. That machined surface wears away for a distinctive look, especially on something like a wallet where it's constantly rubbing against your pants pocket, whether you consider that good or bad.
