I thought I was being careful with my previous programmable thermostat, but the Nest has saved me so much money that it paid for itself in just a few months. Then again, my energy bill is usually around $400 or more in peak winter or summer months.
Also, it's incredibly easy to install, you can replace your old heating and AC thermostat in a few minutes.
I doubt you will save enough money from using this to recoup the cost of this thermostat. This may be a great thermostat but it is way over priced.
Unless you are already at the low end of the spectrum it can pay for it self, and rather quickly.
I installed Gen 2 about 2 years ago and it paid for it self the first winter. (wife was not to happy about it, but it does work) Don't expect much savings if you have a constantly full house. But if you are likemost of us, and don't have a full house all the time the auto schedule and the motion detection will help quite a bit. I also find it more accurate than most thermostats I tried.

Unless you have some sort of remote control vents, or a split system, or also pay for additional per-room (electric?) heaters then it shouldn't make as much difference as you imply.
If it's just a matter of setting a thermostat on a schedule then there are others $30 and under (sale price) that'll do that.
If it's a matter of being less comfortable because you're always waiting for the temperature to get back to a comfort zone then you can just set any thermostat a little higher or lower.
i've been using the nest for years. it has saved me a ton of money. i live a very spontaneous lifestyle. i don't have a regular schedule or routine so the ability to control it on my phone from anywhere makes it worth the money already.

Thank you!
