A whole-house surge protector (SPD) is better for protecting ALL of your stuff from nearby lightning strikes and external surges thanks to your power company switching power systems. These go in your main fuse-panel box but are going to cost $400 - $2100 to get one installed.
However you can still get surges INSIDE your house, such as when electric motors in vacuum cleaners, washing machines, A/C's and furnaces turn off , and the whole-house protectors won't help there. That's where these outlet surge protectors come in handy to protect individual power outlets. Buy a couple for your expensive electronic/electrical equipment.
***The best protection is a layered approach with a combination of fuse-panel SPD and these outlet surge protectors.
BTW, these cheap surge protectors have a limited lifetime, either because a surge has hit it too many times, or they can just wear out over time. I can't vouch for the quality of this particular protector. Check the reviews and if you don't like this one, definitely consider an alternative.
