You can use the switch as a regular switch, but if you want the wireless functionality you need a z-wave control unit. These control units usually come with an app. If you want another way to control the switch you can get the remote or keypad but it is not needed. I myself use OpenHab, its free. Not only can you control z-wave products, but you can also control Nest, Insteon, zigbee, wifi, wemo, and the list goes on.
