I got the impression that it's amplified via a power signal over the cable, but there's no power supply to inject that power. Shame, I bet it'd be better than my rabbit ears.
Amplified does not mean better reception. The only thing an amp does for an antenna is boost the signal you receive so it doesn't degrade over a long cable run. If you get **** reception, the only thing an amp will do is amplify the crappy reception. It will still be crappy reception.
Imagine giving a five year old an electric guitar and you'll hear a terrible noise. Now give him an amp. You'll get a terrible noise but only louder.
