I tried one of these when it popped up last week. The phone is what you'd expect for $30- slow, poor battery life, and a bit dated. I love the free service though! As long as you have sprint coverage you'll be happy.
It should be noted that your voice and data don't use the traditional voice network, instead you are using a freedompop app that makes the calls over the data network. It works pretty good (especially for free) but the big hangup is that you CANNOT get MMS messages. They just don't show up so you'll never know anyone even sent you one. I got around all this by using Google Hangouts with Google Voice. You can call and text (including MMS) from there with your own numer.
As long as you have a little technical skill and know what you are getting this (or a better phone from freedompop) should work great. I've used freedompop for over a year with a hotspot and have loved it. I've always had great customer and technical support from them.
