16-gauge is pretty thin wire for this length.

16 ga would work for light duty electric trimmers or LED Christmas lights.

Indeed it can be dangerous to buy a small gauge cable and then use it by accident in a high-current application when you are in a hurry.

16 gauge is fine for up to 13A. It won't overheat with that much current, but you will see an 8V drop over 80ft at 13A. That might or might not be a problem depending on what appliance is connected to it.
