Bought the 50 pint version last year. It has been on, hooked up to a pump, since day one and it has been running great in my basement. If you live in MA, check out MassSave for a rebate. I think it was $30.
Keep in mind that it's a source of heat, effectively a 745W (Frigidaire product page spec) space heater, while an air conditioner is very similar in operation, dehumidifying but dumping the heat outside.
you bring a good point about ac. If the space can take the cooling I wonder how a portable AC would compare to a window unit in effectiveness and effency. Remember the wettest air is on the floor and AC window unit maybe near the top of the room.
^ Humidity tends to fairly evenly distribute in a room so long as there is at least a little airflow. Perhaps not with sudden changes, but over time the average humidity will start to balance out, unless you have a damp basement or something and it's seeping up from there.
The efficiency and effectiveness is essentially the same, given the same compressor based tech doing the job, except that either type of compact standalone unit will be less efficient than a good/modern window unit because it has larger coil area and more efficient airflow path... so long as you don't gte too oversized a unit so the efficiency drops due to cycling on and off frequently.
