I see snap together furniture as just the materials where you probably want to add some glue, a screw here and there, and maybe also L-bracket reinforcement... then don't ever set anything damp or hot on it but that's true for real wood too. Items can still be a bit fragile to move around, but better than if it were only snapped/peg-cam'd/etc together.
Definitely a compromise but if it were solid wood you'd still want reinforcement and it'd cost a lot more as would shipping... or else you need a truck/SUV/X-over to pick it up.
