I have a couple of these that I have moved to the garage from a place in an extra room used for storage. Over a short period of time, canned grocery goods will cause these particleboard shelves to sag. The incredible-sounding weight limit of these shelving units may apply to the metal frame, which is actually thinner than you may think, but the particleboard shelf inserts are pitiful. Spend the extra few dollars for an HDX-brand metal shelf unit from Home Depot - http://www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-5-Shelf-36-in-W-x-16-in-L-x-72-in-H-Storage-Unit-21656PS-YOW/100656305 - and you'll be much happier!
^ Saw one in a garage where a bottle up top self leaked (I think window washer fluid) from a pin hole in the bottom of the jug. Each and every particle board shelves had systematically got wet and fell onto the next, even the bottom shelf had sagged to the point it broke through. Ii appear to have been over several hour/day to pancake the whole stack, It was actually funny and a mess. Luckily I was just "cruzin" the house looking with a friend who was thinking of flipping it, and that wasn't the worst of it...
So I say "EM_from_TN" suggestion is a much better find for $6 more even if a little smaller. Honestly $41 for this flimsy POS "Erector Set" with a step above card shelves is so crazy over priced this doesn't quantify as a deal at $20 The H-D unit is constructed like those institutional food racks with the poles and wire shelves, there's like 20x the material in that one.
The same style shelves, from Home Depot, are often times found on sale at (though a different brand) for $40. I believe you can also find them at for around the same price.
This shelf unit, I would advise you go to your local home improvement store, and spend the money to buy a 4'x8' piece of plywood. While you're there, have them cut it in 18" pieces for you (you'll get 5, with a 6" scrap left over). Simply having a 3/8" thick piece of plywood, with the particle board on top, will keep the shelves from sagging so badly. You won't need the nicely sanded stuff, just cheap plywood (usually
Ditto on both EM_from_TN and Nivram. Original particle boards are a joke, but replacing them with plywood is easy and makes these shelves great storage solution. And $41 is really, really good price for it.
