^ Yes but image quality will suffer if you have to use VGA, if it doesn't have DVI output or HDMI and you add a $2 HDMI to DVI adapter.
Generally anything well endowed enough to be a desktop replacement 5 years ago would have DVI if not HDMI, and would be capable of 1080p. Just don't expect to play recent vintage 3D games at good framerates.
Maybe it's my eyes, but I've not seen any picture quality improvement from DVI or HDMI. They are digital and HDMI has sound. The concern I would have is the ability of the video to do a 16:9 monitor, although being only 5 years old it should be OK if it has enough RAM. Many notebooks are iffy at resolutions other than native, unless they have 2 video chips.
^ Anything has enough ram for frame buffering 2D at 1080p & 32bit... approx 9MB
Where analog falls short is you start getting pixel bleed or even ghosting if the cable is not fairly short and high quality. This may not matter a lot to some people and their uses but I think it might matter more to those paying extra for an IPS panel over a TN, even though the price difference has shrunk.

Thank you!
