Yeah #1 that's pretty much the case for printers in general -- especially for those on sale. Disposable one-cartridge-use printers are essentially what we have on the market now. The interesting concept is the big-bag or big-tank ink printers that allow the consumer to refill the ink tanks/bags and print considerably more pages than what standard cartridge printers allow. Depending on the make of the laser one can find rather cheap toner cartridges, but your point is still valid in many cases. The unfathomable money-maker is the auto renewal ink system where the consumer is sold/shipped ink when the ink levels become low. I would not subscribe to such a forced policy, but the ink is the real money-maker regardless of ink type.
The one drawback that I saw is the built-in drum/fuser. The printer is a bit loud and isn't the prettiest printer but it gets the job done for a decent price. Oh... and it doesn't have an automatic shutoff so I turn it off after each use.
