The tail is arguably most important and I would prefer easily replaceable battery to ensure it is on.

Agreed, I'd rather they be AA powered and I'll use my Eneloops of which I have a rather large stash.

You can get a tail that takes 2 x AAA or AA for about $3 on
eBay
or dx.com, or a couple bucks more from a US warehouse so it arrives before the cows come home. ;)
