Is there really such a big difference between this and a standard blender that it's worth nearly $200 more?

Depends on whether you really want the best. We've had our Blendtec for a couple of years and it works far better than the cheaper options. Makes margaritas like they came from a machine...perfect consistency. My son uses it every day for protein shakes...it has held up well with constant use.

We make nut butters using raw almonds and cashews , and the blades spin so fast , that the friction also cooks the soup you are making from scratch . Like anything else , it's worth it if you routinely make items in it .

Sounds like it's time to look for OBJECTIVE comparison tests.

We don't make protein shakes with ours but we do make frozen margaritas that guests praise. Our blender cost $8 and we've been using it for many years. No problems. It replaced another blender that we lasted for about 25 years and which cost less than $10, too. It's likely that a very expensive machine is "better" than ours but it's a matter of cost-benefit analysis.

The biggest difference is the engine power and the long (8 year) warranty. While the normal blenders will probably croak under some pressure, this will keep going for years.

The high end blenders have more power and longer warranties. The power allows you to blend stuff faster and blend more things at once without putting a strain on the motors/blades. All of this is really not necessary if your blending just fruits and vegetables. The extra power helps with blending ice and food processing hard stuff

We have a Blendtec at home, use it nearly every day. IMHO the capacity, power and consistency of results make it a worthwhile investment. I personally think they are superior to Vitamix (which we use in our business).

3HP motor..!! That's more than garage door openers... and even most garbage disposals. I think this a creation from Tim Allen from Home Improvement... More power..!! Har har har..!
Personally, I think these are just overkill, sorta like driving a supercharged Mustang to work, I'm sure you need all that power, but my Camry does just fine thanks.
