^ Entirely reasonable to save a buck on only buying what you need, as long the ISP allows registering it and in the case of this model, if your speed tier is 400Mb or lower.
People who get a budget 3.0 modem, probably aren't paying the premium for the faster tiers of internet access either. You can't really future-proof something like this and have it be cost effective because later on you can just get another ~$30 modem that is capable of higher speeds yet again depreciated in value by the latest tech. Besides, modems, or at least their power supplies wear out eventually anyway, can't really future-proof indefinitely by just paying a lot more.
I bought this two years ago refurbished and it was outdated then, Listen to Dave_C and buy the Docsis 3.1 if you have Gigabit or planning on going faster than 780Mbps.
