I have a set of these from a different maker. They're great for making salads and pasta. Just make sure to clean thoroughly and rinse in hot water every now and again.
I thought the circle was to measure out how much spaghetti for 1 person. I don't know why, but that's what an Italian friend of mine told me.
It is meant to be one serving, doing it the old school way where people didn't count calories. Today, that's more than the equivalent of one serving of any other carb, BUT I would never try to mange your diet. If you feel that the hole is right for one serving for you, then go with that or adjust accordingly.
I would worry about buying this kind of material to use with food knowing that it is coming from China, unless it will be a gift for someone you hate!!!
Most manufacturers in China seems to have a total disregard to customers' health. So they use harmful chemicals in processing such materials.
We all know about their fiasco with baby powder milk a while ago, which was eventually pulled back from shelves worldwide.
Use at your own risk, but the set should make a good gift to your mother-in-law if you do not like her :)

Its for mixing/stirring delicate things, like risotto.
