I never quite figured out what these lithium batteries are good for. I don't have anything that calls for these types of batteries. Can they be used in place of AAs?

These are larger in size than AA size batteries, so you can't use these in place of AA, also these are 3.7v compared to 1.5v Alkaline or 1.25vNiMH, these are normally used in flashlights like the other user said.
Flashlights, rebuilding laptop packs, _low_current_ cordless tool packs, portable USB power banks, custom projects, etc... 2 of these in series are about the best option possible for a (reasonably priced) high output LED flashlight.
Lithium-Ion rechargeables in 10440 (AAA size ) AND 14500 (AA) are 3.6V nominal, 4.2V peak, not compatible with devices that take lower voltage alkaline/NiMH/NiCd AAA or AA cells.
