Well, I bet it was "worth" more than that ($5) but that's what the Trade Center would pay you. They are ridiculously low. I'm sure $50 was good though.
Crappy lame-off brand tablets seem to fetch $0.00 according to the trade-in estimation. At least that's according to a search for a DigiLand tablet (one of the tablets Best Buy was selling for Black Friday).
NO one is getting $50 for their tablet. It is essentially a $50 gift card and a tablet recycle drop off to get the Nexus 9. For full price. Plus tax. Terrible deal.
The lifehack to use here is to get the 50$ GC (in my case its for a Hisense Sero LT that bought refurbished on for $25, I've used well, and liked) to buy a Kindle Fire HD 6 for 79-50 GC = 29 bucks plus tax!
ORRRR, what I'll most likely do is buy a prepaid Visa at Best Buy, then buy whatever I want. Sure I'll lose a few dollars loading the card, but its essentially free money anyways.
Success Report: Traded in 2 Hisense LT Tablets for 50$ each. Friend traded in Gen 1 Kindle Fire for the same.
According to the BB Employee, this was done in order to reduce the number of aging tablets out there. A consortium of tablet makers actually funded this, as it benefits them from not having to develop software to keep old devices secure.

Thank you!
